ABCP was designed to investigate the cause and outcome of paediatric anaemia in a cohort of newborn babies in Kenya. The study recruited pregnant women from Asembo Bay, west of Kisumu, Kenya, between 1992 and 1996. Pregnant participants were followed up throughout their pregnancy and at the time of delivery. At baseline, over 1,800 pregnant women were enrolled in the study, and over 1,500 babies were enrolled at birth. Once born, participating babies and mothers were followed up every two weeks for 48 months. Participants were followed up once more in 1999.
