ABCP was designed to investigate the causes and outcomes of paediatric anaemia in a cohort of newborns in Kenya. The study recruited pregnant women from Asembo Bay, west of Kisumu, Kenya, between 1992 and 1996. Pregnant participants were followed throughout their pregnancies and at delivery. At baseline, over 1,800 pregnant women were enrolled in the study, and over 1,500 babies were enrolled at birth. After birth, participating infants and mothers were followed up every 2 weeks for 48 months. Participants were followed up once more in 1999.
