The AHS investigates the relationship between radiation exposure level, disease occurrence, and variation in physiological and biochemical determinants among the survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. Since 1958, the study has followed around 20,000 atomic bomb survivors, selected from the Life Span Study (LSS) cohort. In 1977, around 2,400 LSS participants and 1,000 in utero-exposed individuals were added to the AHS study. In 2008, around 2,000 LSS participants who were exposed before the age of 10 years old were enrolled in the AHS study. Participants have been followed through biennial health examinations. A subset of participants enrolled in the Ni-Hon-San Study in 1965 to 1966.
