The AFFECT study followed a cohort of 23andMe customers who consented to participate in research for more than nine months. Participants were based in the United States of America, and either had a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, a diagnosis of major depression, or neither. Most participants were of European ancestry (71.9%) followed by Latino (14.2%), African American (3.8%), and East Asian (3.6%) ancestry.
