Sample details

The ALIVE study was designed to characterise the incidence and natural history of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection among people who inject drugs in Baltimore, United States of America. Historically, the ALIVE Study operated as two components, titled ALIVE I and ALIVE II, which were combined in November 2019. Over 4,500 participants were recruited using community outreach across multiple waves from 1988 to 2023. Participants are followed up every 6 months and undergo blood collection, questionnaires, health assessments and HIV testing at each visit. There are a number of sub-studies associated with ALIVE.
