Sample details

The objective of this study was to examine risk factors and proportional mortality in a cohort of retired Chinese male military personnel. From February to June 1987, a cross-sectional survey was conducted at 22 military retirement centres in Xi'an, China. A total of 1,268 retired military men aged 55 years or older were examined physically and interviewed using a standard questionnaire. The cohort was followed up every 2 years until the 30th June 2005 to assess all-cause mortality. Death certificates were obtained from hospitals and verified by two senior doctors.
