The AODTS NMDS collects information on treatment provided to clients by publicly funded alcohol and other drug treatment services in Australia. Data are collected by these treatment services and provided to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare by state and territory health departments and non-government treatment agencies. This data collection commenced on 1 July 2000 and is completed annually on clients aged over 10 years. Units of data points are in terms of closed treatment episodes (an episode is closed when treatment is completed, there has been no further contact between the client and the treatment provider for 3 months, or when treatment is ceased). Each client may have multiple treatment episodes in a reference period; for example, 228,500 people sought specialist treatment for either alcohol or amphetamines between 2013-2021 which resulted in 648,400 treatment episodes.
