APOSS was designed to investigate risk factors for osteoporosis. Participants were recruited from Aberdeen, Grampian, in northeast Scotland (United Kingdom). The study recruited over 5,000 women aged 45 to 54 years, residing within a 32-kilometre radius of the Osteoporosis Screening Unit in Aberdeen, at baseline data collection between 1990 and 1994. The study conducted follow-up data collection sweeps from 1997 to 2000 and 2007 to 2011, resulting in almost 20 years of collected data.
