The APPLE study is a prospective population-based study tracking children from 5 years of age until their adolescence (age 12). The study was established to clarify the role of early developmental profiles on the patterns of their developmental trajectories and mental health outcomes in adolescence. Five-year-old children who resided in Hirosaki city, Japan, between 1 April 2013 and 31 March 2016, were recruited for the study annually in a sequential design. Nearly 4,000 five-year-old children participated in the screening phase.
