APPROACH was initiated in 1995 to facilitate the study of provincial outcomes of care and promote quality improvement for patients with coronary artery disease in Alberta, Canada. Participants are over 240,000 adults who were admitted to the hospital for acute coronary syndromes or cardiac procedures. Information is collected regarding the patient’s procedure as well as their comorbidities. Patients have also been invited to provide follow-up information on their experience, generic and disease-specific quality of life, and outcomes at baseline and 1, 3 and 5 years after cardiac catheterization. Further follow-up occurs through administrative data linkage, including health care and mortality data.
