The aim of ARTPER was to investigate the prevalence of peripheral arterial disease using the calculation of the ankle arm index in a general population over the age of 49 years in the province of Barcelona, Spain. Additionally, the study set out to determine the risk factors associated with a pathologic ankle arm index. Participants included at baseline were 3,146 randomly selected patients older than 49 years of age who were ascribed to 28 primary health care centers in the Barcelona area from September 2006 to June 2008.
