The ATHENA cohort study aims to monitor and improve the health outcomes for over 25,000 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) patients from all 26 HIV treatment centers across the Netherlands. Participants have been continuously recruited since the study’s inception in 1998. On 1 January 2017, 19,035 HIV-1-positive participants were known to be in HIV care: 18,824 were aged 18 years or older and 211 were below 18 years of age. Follow-up visits are conducted every 12 to 24 months, coinciding with the patients’ routine clinic visits for their HIV check-ups, where the data collected during these medical appointments serves as the follow-up information for the study.
