The AUPD aims to collect and analyse prescription data to study drug utilisation and safety. This is done by retaining patients’ universal personal identifiers in dispensation records, allowing for individual-level linkage to all Danish registries and medical databases. The database, beginning in 1989 and covering only the North Jutland region, expanded in 1992 to include the Central and North Denmark Region and parts of the former Vejle county. New databases are continuously added, encompassing 1.8 million people and representing one-third of the Danish population.
