The AYLS is the Finnish arm of the Bavarian-Finnish Longitudinal Study. The original aim was to compare the outcomes of neonatal care in Finland and in Bavaria, Germany, up to 56 months of age. The study was then extended into adulthood to understand long-term somatic, cognitive, behavioural and emotional consequences of early life adversities. AYLS participants were 1,500 infants admitted to neonatal wards and 658 control infants born without evidence of neonatal illness in Uusimaa, Finland, born from 1985 to 1986. Mothers completed a baseline perinatal questionnaire, and infants were followed up at five, 20 and 56 months. An additional wave of follow-up was carried out when the infants reached adulthood, at 24 to 26 years.
