Sample details

The BBJ is a large, multi-institutional patient-based biobank collecting biological samples and medical information from around 260,000 patients diagnosed with common diseases in Japan. Between 2003 and 2008, around 200,000 patients diagnosed with any of 47 target diseases were recruited into the first cohort from 66 hospitals located throughout Japan. The BBJ recruited a second cohort between 2012 and 2017, comprising around 67,000 new participants with one or more of 38 target diseases (34 diseases common to first cohort + 4 new diseases). Participants have been followed-up with additional surveys and medical record linkage for over 10 years.
