The BELLA study is the mental health module of the German National Health Interview and Examination Survey among Children and Adolescents (KiGGS) and aims to assess the mental health and well-being of children and adolescents in Germany. It focuses on identifying the prevalence of mental health problems and disorders, as well as examining risk and protective factors that influence mental health development. Participants are a subset of the KiGGS sample, recruited from across Germany between the ages of 7 and 17. In addition to those participants assessed at baseline, further KiGGS participants have been added to later waves of BELLA to maintain the representativeness of the sample. Baseline data of almost 3,000 participants was collected from 2003 to 2006 and subsequent waves have taken place at one, two, six and 11 years.
