The BerlinLCS investigated the immediate biological embedding of maltreatment in children. It aimed to identify biological processes at multiple levels of regulation in the immediate aftermath of exposure and to associate these processes with clinical and developmental trajectories over time in Germany. The study assessed 173 children aged 3 to 5 years at baseline, including 86 children who had been exposed to maltreatment in the form of physical or emotional abuse or neglect within six months and 87 non-maltreated (control) children, as well as the children's caregivers. The study followed participants every six months for up to two years. Some children who were part of BerlinLCS were also included in Kids2Health as a follow up.
