Sample details

The BHP monitors health and survival of both women and children in a nationally representative rural Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) in Guinea-Bissau. The BHP rural HDSS covers women of reproductive age and children below the age of 5 years residing in clusters. Between 1990 and 2006, the HDSS covered 20 clusters in Oio, Biombo, Gabu, Cacheu, and Bafata. As of 2024, the project is the oldest of its kind in Africa and one of the largest, covering around 100,000 individuals in the urban study area and a corresponding number in the rural areas.
