This study tested the hypothesis that chronic excessive consumption of ethanol is associated with a higher severity of the neurological deficit in acute ischemic stroke. Patients with ischemic, hemorrhagic, or hemispheric stroke within 48 hours of symptom onset admitted to Lille University Hospital, France, were recruited for the BIOSTROKE study. A total of 477 patients were included, with a median age of 70 years and 47.0% being women. Patients completed a follow-up examination 8 and 90 days after admission, and 210 patients were then reviewed or assessed by phone 5 years later.
