The Brain Maturation Study aimed to examine the development of inhibition, risk-taking, planning, and emotion recognition in adolescents in relation to white matter microstructural development in the brain. The study recruited two cohorts with participants from the local Heidelberg community in Germany, aged 9 and 12 years, respectively, to create an accelerated cohort design. Participants were mostly right-handed, German speaking, more than two kilograms at birth, without dental braces, intellectual disabilities, developmental disorders, psychiatric conditions, or a sibling participating in the study. Of the participants, 47% were female, and 53% were male.
