BHRP was an open cohort designed to register vital events of a population in the Butajira District in central Ethiopia. In 1986, the program covered all individuals of all ages within all 10 villages in the district. At baseline, the BRHP included over 23,000 individuals. Over time, due to new participants being born or migrating into the study area, the program grew to include over 70,000 individuals in 2010. Participants were followed up on monthly and then quarterly from 1986 until the study ended in 2010.
