The Bulgarian Post-Stroke Study was designed to evaluate the delayed changes in cognition and their relationship to neuropsychological and neuroimaging markers following first incidents of strokes. Consecutive inpatients experiencing a first-ever ischemic cerebral stroke were recruited into the study within three days of stroke onset from the acute stroke unit of the Clinic of Neurology, Ruse, Bulgaria. 85 patients were included in the study, and were all aged between 50 and 80 years, with a mean age of 65.6 years. A control group of 25 subjects, matched to the patients group according to their age and educational level, were also included. The baseline assessment was completed within five days of their stroke. Participants were then followed up one month, six months, 1 year and 2 years following their stroke.
