The Butajira cohort is a long-term cohort study of people with severe mental illness living in the predominantly rural district of Butajira, Ethiopia. The cohort was recruited between March 1998 and May 2001 via a two-stage screening process within the adult population of the district to identify people living with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depression. After screening over 68,000 adults, a total of 919 individuals were diagnosed as having severe mental disorders (358 with schizophrenia, 216 with major depression, and 345 with bipolar disorder) and were followed up regularly for an average of 10 years.
