Sample details

The CAIDE study investigates the lifestyle and cardiovascular risk factors for dementia, Alzheimer's disease (AD) and structural brain changes in Eastern Finland. The cohort comprises Finnish individuals who participated in previous surveys (North Karelia project and FINMONICA/FINRISK study) between 1972 and 1987, during midlife. In 1998, approximately 1,500 individuals (aged 64 to 79 years) participated in a first re-examination as part of the CAIDE study. A second re-examination was conducted between 2005 and 2008. Between 2006 and 2009, a second cohort of almost 300 participants who also participated in the previous surveys was enrolled and assessed. The third follow-up (CAIDE 85+) was conducted between 2019 and 2021, assessing both samples. Participants are continuously followed up through linkage to national registers.
