The study is a retrospective cohort study examining cancer incidence among 34,457 banana plantation workers in Costa Rica, consisting of 29,565 men and 4,892 women, based on payroll records reported to the Costa Rican Social Security System between 1972 and 1979. Participants were identified from payroll records of banana companies and linked to multiple national registries, including the National Tumor Registry (NTR) for cancer incidence, the Civil Registry for demographic verification, the Electoral Roll for identifying living individuals, the Mortality Registry for deceased individuals, and the Birth Registry for confirming birth records. The cohort includes workers born before 1964, with all participants being Costa Rican citizens and excluding foreign workers and minors. Follow-up was conducted through linkage with the above listed registries from 1981 to 1992.
