CHS is designed to assess the risks of coronary heart disease and stroke in older adults. In 1989, the study recruited adults aged 65 years and older from North Carolina, California, Maryland, and Pennsylvania in the United States of America. At baseline, over 5,000 adults were included in the study. After the baseline interview, over 600 adults who identified as African American were recruited. Participants were followed up every six months by telephone contact, and in-person examinations took place annually until 1999. Participants continue to be followed up by telephone annually.
