The CHEF research projects focus on the health of children and adults in the Faroe Islands, with an emphasis on the impact of seafood diets and marine contaminants. A cohort of over a thousand singleton births was formed in the Faroe Islands during a 21-month period from 1986 to 1987. Umbilical cord blood and maternal hair were examined. Following this, the first detailed examination took place at age 7, just before school entry, in 1993 and 1994. A total of 917 of the surviving children (90.3%) completed the examinations. Follow-up examinations were completed at ages 14 years, 22 years, and 23 years.
