The CHNS examines the effects of health, nutrition, and family planning policies and programs on Chinese society. The study recruited households from Liaoning, Shandong, Henan, Jiangsu, Hubei, Hunan, Guizhou, and Guangxi provinces in China. At baseline data collection in 1989, over 15,900 individuals from 3,795 households were included. In 1997, Heilongjiang province was added to the study. In 2011, Beijing, Chongqing, and Shanghai mega cities were added as study sites. In 2015, Shaanxi, Yunnan, and Zhejiang provinces were added as study sites. As of 2015, over 20,900 individuals from 7,319 household were included in the study.
