CIC is based on data of all children in Denmark, born in 1995, who are currently or have formerly been placed in care. To identify the participants, the Danish municipal Child Protective Services identified any child born in 1995 that was or is in care nationwide at the time of the data collection, as well as their parents and carers. The first data collection was conducted in the spring of 2003, when the children were 7 to 8 years of age. Follow-up of the children occurs every third year during childhood, adolescence, and adult life.
