The CIPA study is a 15-year, nationally representative investigation of mental health in the general population in Norway, which began in 2023 and will continue until 2038. The study includes registry data from the entire Norwegian population (over 5.6 million individuals) and self-report data from over 20,000 adults recruited through Norwegian population registries, designed to sample participants from each region of Norway relative to the region’s population size, thereby yielding a geographically representative sample. As of 2025, the longitudinal self-report data include three waves, each with a two-month interval (equidistant). An intensive longitudinal (ecological momentary assessment; EMA) study is conducted with a sub-sample of over 3,700 adults from the longitudinal self-report study. Additional recruitment is ongoing for future phases and will continue until 2038. Data from the self-report studies can be linked to the registry data. The registry data spans from 1970 (depending on the registry) and will be accessible annually until 2038.
