This study aimed to understand autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and its subtypes. The study recruited 106 children diagnosed with ASD, 25 with significantly impaired cognitive ability but without ASD, categorised as the non-ASD developmental delay (DD) group, and 70 children with no behavioural or psychological concerns, categorised as the typical development (TYP) group. Participants were aged two to six years and were recruited from Washington, DC and the Bethesda, Maryland area in the United States of America. Visits before participants' third birthday were spaced at six-month intervals, and later visits were annual until the child completed at least three years of participation or until the child’s fifth birthday. The study was conducted between 2006 and 2014.
