The CMCC is a cohort of pregnant women and their subsequent offspring, and investigates early childhood development, environment and eugenics, perinatal health, maternal and child nutrition and health, and maternal and child policies and systems. Five provinces across the five major regions of China (the four corners and one centre) were selected for the project, and in each province, four health care institutions (2 urban, 2 rural) were chosen, for a total of 20 health care institutions. When a pregnant woman undergoes a pregnancy examination for the first time at one of these selected medical institutions, her information will be collected on the platform for the current research.
