The CNTR, established in 2001, aims to assess the interplay between genetic and environmental factors towards health outcomes, mainly focusing on cardiovascular health, through examining twins across China. Participants are from nine provinces within the country, including Beijing, Shanghai, Qingdao, and Lishui, collecting data from urban and rural areas. Initially, 7,423 twin pairs were recruited from 2001 to 2005 through local Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCs), residence registries, and public media, primarily below 18 years old, with the cohort having grown significantly and follow-ups for adults occurring every 2.5 years.
