The study recruited newborns of mothers over the age of 18, with plans to deliver at the University Hospital of Bologna in Italy between 2004 and 2005. All mothers in the study spoke Italian and did not move from the hospital they gave birth in. The study aimed to explore the effects of environmental exposure on development with over 600 children and mothers, and nearly 600 fathers.
