The CSHA study aimed to estimate the prevalence of dementia and its subtypes by sex and age, for five regions of Canada. Participants were recruited via random selection of those in municipal records from the community and in institutional settings. Baseline interviews were conducted with approximately 10,200 participants in total, 9,000 from the community and 1,200 from institutions between 1991 to 1992. Participants were then followed up at 5-year intervals in 1996 (CSHA-2) and 2001 (CSHA-3). The study ended in 2001, after 10 years.
