The DGS aims to investigate the prevalence, incidence, and risk factors for chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis, dementia, and cancer among elderly South Koreans. Participants are individuals aged 50 years or older, residing in the urban area of the Dong-gu district in Gwangju, South Korea. A total of 9,260 participants (3,711 men and 5,549 women) were recruited in the baseline survey between April 2007 and July 2010, with follow-up planned at regular intervals.
