The DHDSS was established to monitor noncommunicable diseases and their risk factors on a population basis. The study site consists of the Dikgale suburb in South Africa, with over 8,000 participants enumerated at the end of 1995. All individuals whose permanent home is in the site are included in the surveillance. An annual census update round has been conducted since 1996, including data on life events, migrations, and household socioeconomic status. As of 2009, the DHDSS was enlarged into contiguous surrounding communities, with the study population growing to around 36,000 participants as of 2010.
