DHDSS is designed to monitor and collect health, demographic, and social data on a population in south-eastern Ghana. The HDSS includes all inhabitants of the Shai-Osudoku and Ningo-Prampram districts in the Greater Accra region of Ghana. The baseline survey in 2005 included 97,038 people in 22,343 households. As babies are born, people die or migrate in and out of the study area, and the HDSS population changes. As of 2012, the study consisted of over 110,000 participants in 23,647 households. Participants are followed up with twice a year.
