The ECUAVIDA study follows a birth cohort of over 2,400 newborns in the rural district of Quininde, Esmeraldas Province, Ecuador. Eligible newborns were delivered at the Hospital Padre Alberto Buffoni between November 2006 and December 2009, the only hospital serving the Quininde district. Recruitment occurred through the newborn's mothers in the maternity and vaccination departments of the hospital.
