The ELGAN Study follows extremely low gestational age newborns (ELGANs), defined as babies born more than three months before the expected date of birth, to learn more about the causes of common medical problems and developmental difficulties typically faced. The study first enrolled 1,506 babies born before 28 weeks gestation at 14 sites, of which 1,201 (80%) survived to 2 years corrected age. The babies have been followed over time, at 2, 10, 15, 17, and 18+ years.
