ELSA is a longitudinal study investigating the health, social, well-being, and economic circumstances of people aged 50 and over in England. In 2002, the study recruited adults aged 50 or older from households that responded to the 1998, 1999, or 2001 waves of the Health Survey for England (HSE). At baseline, over 12,000 participants were included in the study. Participants are followed up every other year to measure changes in health, economic and social circumstances. New participants are periodically recruited to retain the representativeness of the sample. New participants have been recruited in waves 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10, and 11.
