ELSA-Brasil aims to investigate the incidence and progression of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases and their biological, behavioural, environmental, occupational, psychological, and social factors. Participants are over 15,000 civil servants from five universities and one research institute located in different regions of Brazil. All active or retired employees of the institutions aged 35 to 74 years were eligible for the study. Baseline interviews took place from 2008 to 2010. Participants are followed up with telephone interviews annually and in-person examinations in 2012-14; 2016-18; 2023-24.
