ENRICH-1 aimed to explore the effects of moderate alcohol and/or opioid exposure in pregnancy on development. Over 600 pregnant women were recruited from the University of New Mexico (United States of America) prenatal clinics from October 2013 to August 2017. Participants included four study groups: healthy controls who did not use alcohol or opioids during pregnancy, women who used alcohol during pregnancy, patients receiving medications for the treatment of opioid use disorder who did not use alcohol during pregnancy, and opioid use disorder patients who concurrently used alcohol. Baseline data were collected at the prenatal visit, and mothers and their children were followed up at the hospital shortly after delivery. Child development was assessed at 6 months and 20 months of age.
