EPIC-Italy is a part of EPIC-Europe, a collaborative project that studies different populations from countries across Europe to investigate the relationships between diet, nutrition, lifestyle, and environmental factors, and the incidence of cancer and other chronic diseases. EPIC-Italy was originally based in four areas based on cancer registries: the provinces of Florence, Ragusa, and Varese and the city of Turin. An additional center, the city of Naples, later became associated with EPIC through the Progetto ATENA study. The participants are residents of the four study areas aged 35 to 65 years. Over 47,000 participants completed a baseline questionnaire and have been followed up periodically through linked mortality and cancer registry data, as well as active recall.
