The aim of the EPICARDIAN study was to determine the major predictors of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the elderly population in Spain and to develop specific CVD risk charts for this age group. Over 4,000 participants, aged 65 years and older, were recruited from three areas of Spain, two rural and one urban. Participants completed interview and physical examinations at baseline assessment in 1994 and follow ups in 1998 and 2004. All participants were followed up for CVD incidence and mortality through linked data for up to 10 years after baseline.
