The study follows 585 participants who were patients consecutively admitted to Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, United States of America for ischemic stroke. Participants were aged 60 years or older at baseline and had a diagnosis of ischemic stroke within the previous 30 days, which was confirmed by brain imaging. The first 297 participants were recruited between 1988 and 1990 and the remaining 288 participants between 1994 and 1997. The study also recruited a random selection of 249 individuals from the surrounding community, spouses of patients, and neighbourhood volunteers as a control group.
