In 2011, the EpiDoC study aimed to create a large population database for medical and health-related research in Portugal. The study is a nationally representative prospective cohort focusing on adults over the age of 18 years living in private households across Portugal's mainland and islands, with a sample size calculated to reflect the estimated prevalence of rheumatic diseases. At baseline, 52.6% of participants were female, 22.1% fell in the 18 to 29 year age category, and 8.4% were over the age of 75 years.
