Sample details

The ESTER study is a birth cohort study of individuals born between 1985 and 1989 in Northern Finland that investigated how preterm birth and maternal pregnancy disorders affect offspring health and well-being in adulthood. Cohort members born in 1985-1986 were recruited via the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1986 (NFBC1986), and those born in 1987-1989 were identified through the Finnish Medical Birth Register (FMBR). At 23 years of age, 1,161 participants underwent a full clinical and neuropsychological assessment in 2009-2011. Of these, 753 participated in the preterm birth stud,y comprising 396 participants born preterm and 356 term-born controls. The participants are planned to be invited to a re-examination and can also be traced through linkage with medical records and national registers.
