The ESTHER study is a population-based study of older adults from Saarland, Germany, that aims to improve the prevention, early detection, and treatment of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease or cancer. At baseline, 9,940 participants, aged 50 to 74 years, were recruited during a health check-up with their general practitioner between July 2000 and December 2002. The participants have been followed up every 2 to 3 years for over 20 years.
