EXPRESS aimed to determine the incidence of neonatal morbidity in extremely preterm infants and to identify associated risk factors. The study population comprised all live-born (gestational age of less than 26 weeks 6 days) and stillborn infants (gestational age between 22 weeks 0 days and 26 weeks 6 days) delivered extremely preterm in Sweden from April 1, 2004, to March 31, 2007. Terminations of pregnancy and infants born outside of Sweden and transferred to Sweden for neonatal care were not included in the sample. The mean age of mothers at delivery was 30.9 years, ranging from 14 to 46 years.
