The FHS was a multicenter, population-based genetic epidemiology study of coronary heart disease (CHD), involving 3,156 probands and 22,909 of their relatives. Participants were recruited between 1993 and 1995 from four sites in the United States of America: Framingham (MA), Salt Lake City (UT), Minneapolis (MN), and Forsyth County (NC). Recruitment was conducted through 3 parent studies - the Framingham Heart Study, Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC), and the Utah Health Family Tree Study - using a combination of random sampling and selection based on family risk scores for CHD. Probands were aged 45 to 69 years, and their relatives aged 25 years or older were invited to participate, resulting in a large, multigenerational cohort. Participants were followed up once, approximately one year after baseline.
